Mary Dimmock [d.1]

Mary Dimmock was the first child of David Dimmock & Mary Halsey born December 10th, 1837 & christened at Sandridge & christened January 7th, 1838 at Sandridge, Herts.

In 1841 Mary was living in Sandridge, Herts with her parents & little brother George.

In 1851 Mary was lodging in Luton, Bedfordshire at Park Street West & working as a bonnet sewer.

Mary married William Dell on March 22nd, 1860 at St Peter’s, St Albans, Herts.  William was born July 24th, 1838 at Tittenhanger Green, Herts & christened September 16th, 1838 at Sandridge, the son of Mary & George Dell, a baker. William gave his occupation as a baker.

In 1871 William & Mary were living at Wicklow St, St Pancras, London where William was a police constable.

By 1881 they had moved to 157 Derby Buildings, St Pancras & William continued to work as a police constable.

By 1882 William had retired from the Metropolitan police force & he & Mary were living back in Hertfordshire as seen from an amusing article in the Hertford Mercury & Reformer of March 4th, 1882.  Mary & William obviously had trouble with some quarrelsome neighbours.  Jane Ewen, the neighbour in question, was summoned for assault on Mary.  This had taken the form of Jane throwing a pail of water over Mary when Mary had come to fetch a pail of water from a water tub early one morning.  Jane stated that the water belonged to her & that they had not been on good terms with their neighbours since they had come to live there.  The chairman of the hearing advised them all to go home & be better friends in future.

William died, aged 49, on October 31st, 1888 at Park St & was buried November 7th at St Stephen’s Herts.

By 1891 widowed Mary was living at Branch Road, Park St, St Albans, Herts.  She was working as a straw hat maker & had a 35 year old boarder, A Burrage, a joiner.

Mary continued to live at Park St, St Albans, Herts in 1901.  She was now working as a straw hat sewer & had a boarder, Elizabeth Mundy, aged 90.

In 1911 Mary was still living at 64 Park St & she again had a lodger, Emma Goss, an 81 year old widow.

Mary died in April-June 1919, aged 82, her death being registered at St Albans.
